Peridot and the Minerals of Hawaii.
by Mario |
Peridot and the Minerals of Hawaii. It was a great day for Hawaii when Pele, the fire goddess, was sent away from her home in Tahiti by her father. When Pele arrived in Hawaii she is said to have lit the mountain volcanoes with her creative and destructive fires. This fiery energy is, without doubt, the source of Hawaii’s growth and power. It is the volcanoes, under the legendary power of Pele, that continue to erupt and create this, the newest land on Earth. Each day as more molten lava emerges from the fire pits of Hawaii, new land is formed as it cools. Mauna Kea began its life 800,000 years ago on the ocean floor as an underwater volcano. Mauna Kea is now over 9,000 metres above the ocean floor and 4,200 metres above sea level. This is an example of the amazing creative energy of volcanoes. Hawaii is rich in minerals from the vast resources that lie beneath the Earth’s crust. All crystals, minerals and rocks are formed from the molten lava. Crystal and minerals that can be found on Hawaii range from Obsidian to Peridot. Each of the crystals found on Hawaii are directly related to the volcanoes and fire energy. Anyone who has worked with obsidian will have an understanding of the power of volcanic islands and their awesome energy. Obsidian is well known to help its user in seeking and finding the truth easily. Obsidian cuts through the chaos like sharpened glass. In fact obsidian is volcanic glass, which is formed when lava is erupted from volcanoes at super high temperatures and then cools rapidly in our cooler atmosphere. In ancient times obsidian was used as the stone to drive out demons. In the Middle Ages obsidian was used as an aid in magical rituals. Obsidian has long been used for healing wounds and reducing pain. You can work with obsidian in two ways. Using obsidian as a meditation stone can help remove emotional and spiritual blockages. Wearing obsidian, as a pendant or bracelet close to the skin can reduce pain. Rainbow obsidian in particular asks us to embrace our shadow selves as a part of the path to joy. Other varieties of obsidian that can be found on Hawaii include mahogany obsidian, snowflake obsidian, gold sheen obsidian, Pele’s tears and Pele’s Hair. Pele’s tears are formed in the same way as Apache tears are formed. They are simply droplets of molten lava which have fallen onto the pumice rocks surrounding a volcano. There is an old Apache legend, about 75 Apache braves and the US Cavalry fought against each other on a mountain overlooking what is now Superior, Arizona in the 1870’s. Rather than face defeat, the outnumbered Apache warriors rode their horses off the mountain to their deaths. The families of the Braves cried when they learned of the tragedy. Their tears turned to obsidian upon hitting the ground. Today these beautiful translucent stones are known as Apache tears. In Hawaii they are known as Pele’s tears. They are simply droplets of molten lava which have fallen onto the pumice rocks surrounding a volcano. Pele’s hairs are formed in a similar way. The lava droplets are thrust high into the sky by the volcano. They are then caught by a powerful wind. This wind stretches the droplets of lava into long golden or green strands, which cool rapidly. They then fall to the earth as Pele’s golden or green hairs of obsidian. The green variety contains some of the true treasure of Hawaii, its Peridot. Peridot is a gem stone that is only found near to volcanoes. Peridot can be found in Hawaii as well as places closer to home such as Tenerife and Lanzarote. The Peridot from Hawaii is particularly beautiful. At South Point on Big Island, Hawaii, there is a very special beach. The beach here is covered with green sand made from Peridot crystals. Millions of peridot crystals have been naturally tumbled by the sea to create this amazing place. Imagine sunbathing on this healing, crystal sand. Peridot was used for jewellery in ancient Egypt over two thousand years ago. It is a stone of friendship and wisdom. Many green crystals are related to love and the heart chakra, and peridot is no exception. Peridot is said to help us to release anger and bring about more emotional balance. Peridot has a special gift for us. Peridot is one of the best stones for detoxification. It is said to strengthen and assist both the liver and the gallbladder. This stone is wonderful to wear for those of us who have smoked or drunk a lot of alcohol in their lives. If you can’t get to the green beach then there are many ways we can work with the energies of peridot in our daily lives. Peridot can be found in many crystal and jewellery shops up and down the country. It is the stone with the bright olive green colour and can come faceted or in cabochons. Wearing peridot close to the skin is best. You can also buy small crystals of peridot from good crystal and mineral shops. If you want to experience the energy of peridot in a new way, you can try this at home. You will need three pieces of peridot and a quartz point. Sit cross legged or lie on the floor. Get a friend or relative to place the three pieces of peridot in a triangle around you. Place one piece above or behind the head and two at the feet or knees. Then get your friend to join the crystals with the quartz point (walk around them pointing the quartz point at the peridot crystals, making a triangle). Mario 2006
