Each prayer wheel contains a prayer written on paper inside. When resisting your chant you would spon the rotate the payer wheel and the energy of the rotation sends the prayer to heaven. 
The symbols are brass on copy and read Om Mani Padmi Om, the jewel is in the heart of the lotus.
