A large vivianite cluster. Vivianite is a blue mineral that forms on dead organic matter under specific conditions, particularly when the matter is buried in iron-rich, waterlogged environments. It occurs as phosphate from the decaying remains interacts with iron and water, resulting in the distinctive blue and blue-green crystals often found on fossils, shells, bones and skin.
